- What is California Injury Guide, and what is it not?
- California Injury Guide is a directory of personal injury law firms licensed by the State Bar of California. You read the listings and contact a firm yourself, by its own phone number or website. It lists 391 personal injury law firms across 72 California areas (latest check 2026-11-05). It is not a law firm and not a lawyer referral service: we do not recommend, endorse or refer you to any lawyer, we do not take your case details, and lawyers do not pay us for referrals or a share of fees. Nothing here is legal advice.
- How do I check a lawyer on the State Bar of California site?
- Use the attorney search on calbar.ca.gov and search by the lawyer’s name or State Bar number. The profile shows the license status (only Active lawyers may practice law in California), the date the lawyer was admitted, whether there is public discipline on record, with the documents, and any certified specialty from the State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization. Every listing here links the State Bar profile; open it to see the current record before you hire.
- How do contingency fees and case costs work?
- With a contingency fee, the lawyer is paid a share of any money recovered instead of an hourly rate. California Business and Professions Code §6147 requires a contingency fee agreement to be in writing, with a signed copy for you, and to say how costs affect the fee and your recovery. Costs (such as filing fees, records and experts) are separate from the fee. Ask whether the percentage is taken before or after costs, whether it changes if the case goes to court, and whether you owe costs if there is no recovery. We do not publish typical percentages: the fee is negotiable and set by your agreement.
- What does “Advertisement” mean on this site?
- A listing marked “Advertisement” is a paid placement: the firm paid a flat fee to be shown in that labelled spot. It is not a recommendation or a ranking, and it is never paid per lead, call, case or referral, or as a share of legal fees. An advertisement appears in its own labelled space, separate from the directory list, and it does not change a firm’s trust check or State Bar record.
- Is the first consultation free?
- Many personal injury firms say the first consultation is free, but not all do, and what “free” covers can vary. Each listing shows whether the firm’s own site states a free consultation. If it doesn’t, ask whether the first meeting is charged before you book it. 359 firms in the directory state a free consultation.
- Can I find a lawyer who speaks Spanish?
- Yes. Use the “Se habla español” filter to see firms whose own site says they serve clients in Spanish. Listings also show other languages a firm states, quoted as the firm says it. If you need another language, ask the firm whether it provides an interpreter. 126 firms in the directory say they serve clients in Spanish.
- What does California Injury Guide check for each listing?
- Each listing has a trust check: a list of facts with their sources, not a rating or a score. It shows that the firm is a real, sourced business; links the lawyer’s State Bar of California profile with the license status, admission year, whether public discipline is on record and any certified specialty as the profile showed when we checked; and records whether the firm’s own site publishes a State Bar number, says it serves clients in Spanish or other languages, states a free consultation or a contingency fee, says it takes calls 24/7, and lists its offices. A listing is published only if its State Bar record read Active. We do not show ratings, reviews, testimonials or case results.
- How are listings ordered?
- Alphabetically by default, or by distance if you choose “Near me”. We do not rank firms, and there is no “top” or “best” order. Paid placements carry the “Advertisement” label and are shown separately, never as the first result of the directory list.
- A listing is wrong or a firm is missing. How do I fix it?
- Firms can claim their listing, and anyone can suggest a missing firm or a correction from the “For businesses” page. Requests are checked against the firm’s official sources and the State Bar profile before anything changes on a public listing.
